Evaluations

Comprehensive evaluations are the first step in our process. Evaluations give a snapshot of your child’s strengths and weaknesses and gives the therapist a starting point for treatment. During this time the therapist will address:

  • Oral motor function

  • Speech sound development

  • Expressive and receptive language skills

  • Fluency

  • Voice

  • Pragmatics

  • Feeding issues, if applicable

We know it is impossible to understand your child from one evaluation. We engage in ongoing assessment as we learn more about each client in therapy to best tailor therapy sessions to fit their individual needs.

Our Approach

The foundation of our work with children begins with establishing a genuine, trusting relationship.  With that trust we can get a deeper understanding of the child.  As we address speech and language goals, we ensure the child’s sensory needs are met through regulation techniques as well as ensuring engagement.  Once the foundation has been established, now we can focus on learning!  Our therapy is always:

  • Play based

  • Neurodiversity friendly and affirming

  • Family centered

We always value parent participation in therapy and do our best to keep you informed and engaged with your child’s progress!

Speech sound disorders

Some children have speech sound disorders in which their speech development is not typical for their age.  Common speech sound errors are:

·       Using a “w” for “r”, as in “wed” for red”

·       A lisp

Late talkers

Early intervention is key for late talkers! Speech therapy is helpful for toddlers who are exhibiting:

·      Reduced speech output

·      Difficulty comprehending directions

·      Poor connection with others

Language disorders

Language deficits can involve expression or comprehension.  Children with language difficulties may have:

·      Poor sentence structure

·      Low vocabulary

·      Difficulty following or understanding directions

Autism

Autism encapsulates many areas of needs for a lot of children.  Many children with autism benefit from speech therapy to address:

·      Speech intelligibility

·      Language skills

·      Pragmatics

·      AAC (communication devices)

Feeding disorders

Feeding difficulties that we can address include sensory based feeding aversions leading to limited diets.  Children with sensory based feeding disorders may exhibit:

·      Refusals for new foods

·      Gagging or even vomiting when trying new foods

·      Restricted diets leading to possible nutritional deficits
